Many of the walks described on this site are on land owned by the National Trust. The organisation protects around 12% of the Peak District National Park including most of the popular dales, such as Dovedale, and upland areas like Kinder Scout.
The National Trust is an independent charity which exists to "preserve places of historic interest or natural beauty permanently for the nation to enjoy". Throughout England, Wales and Northern Ireland, the organisation protects over 200 historic houses and 230 gardens as well as almost a quarter of a million hectares of countryside and 550 miles of coastline. All this costs money - a lot of money - to look after.
The National Trust relies on its members and supporters to provide its funds. Contrary to popular belief, it's not a Government agency and its conservation work is not financed by the government. I've been a member for many years - if you're not, will you consider joining? In return for making a real contribution to the protection of the Peak District, you'll get free entry to most of those properties and gardens, along with free parking at properties and in National Trust car parks in the Peak District and elsewhere.

NB: The 'peakwalking' website is not supported or approved by the National Trust. My only connection with the organisation is by being a member and an enthusiastic supporter of its work.
It's very lonely out here, so please email me and tell me what you think of the site. Feel free to make suggestions for favourite walks you'd like to see covered or other things I could add to the site. I want people to visit regularly, so please help. It's your site, too!
In case you're wondering who put all this stuff together - it was me! My name's Neil Tonks and I lived on the edge of the Peak District for many years until July 2002, when I moved to the North Leicestershire countryside with Janette, the lady in my life, who I married in 2003.
I've been a 'serious' walker for around 30 years, ever since I got bored with just driving around the Peak District and bought myself a pair of boots (for the princely sum of £14!).
Apart from the Peak District, I walk around our home in the Vale of Belvoir and in the Lake District when time permits. For my 'day job' I work for MidlandHR, an HR and payroll software and services company based just outside Nottingham.
Why did I decide to do this site? Well, because I'd like to share my love of the Peak District and because at the time I started it (way back in May 1998), there was a dearth of good information about the place on the Internet. I thought I could fill a gap - it's up to you to decide whether I have!
